PROPANE PIPING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS (PPSR) & PROPANE PIPING SYSTEM SELECTION & SIZING (PPSSS)
2010 Registration Form
Who Should Attend? Plumbers, heating & cooling contractors, architects, management, or any individual expected to design propane-piping systems, perform work on propane piping systems, or initiate or restore gas service in gas piping systems & connected equipment for new & existing customers.
Why attend:
As of July 1, 2007, the adopted and filed rules regarding flammable and combustible liquids – 661 Iowa Administrative Code Chapter 226 became law in Iowa. This means that Iowa has adopted the 2004 Edition of NFPA 58 and the 2006 Edition of NFPA 54. Section 226.4 (2) reads “Persons who install, service, test, or maintain propane gas utilization equipment, or gas piping systems of which the equipment is a part, or accessories shall be trained in the proper procedures in accordance with applicable codes.” Chapter 226 requires training relative to the applicable codes, completion of a knowledge assessment (at the session) and completion of a skill assessment every three years. This class will meet these requirements. The training shall be documented. Documentation shall be maintained by the current employer of the person receiving the training. The Iowa Propane Gas Association is offering a ½ day propane specific hands-on session on installing and maintaining propane piping systems designed for plumbing, heating, and cooling contractors (each class meets the requirements in the “plumbing discipline” for Continuing Education Course credit with the Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board – Iowa Department of Public Health. Each class qualifies for 3 hours of CE).
Propane Piping System Requirements (PPSR) – AM Class 8:00 – 12:00
Propane piping systems are covered by certain codes which include specific requirements relative to acceptable materials, allowable pressures, the location of components, pressure testing procedures for new piping, and recommended methods for leakage testing every time an interruption of service occurs.
Course Content: Individuals attending this session will be expected to identify in current applicable codes the following:
- Acceptable materials for use in gas piping systems.
- Acceptable pressures for first-stage, second-stage, and third-stage elevated pressure systems,
- Requirements for the installation, adjustment, and maintenance of pressure regulators, including positioning or protection, distances to exposures, testing, and replacement
- Requirements for proper testing of new piping prior to acceptance and initial operation.
- Requirements for leakage testing of piping systems and connected equipment immediately after service is initiated or immediately after a service interruption, and
- Documentation of all work performed.
Propane Piping System Selection & Sizing (PPSSS) Refresher Class - PM Class 1:00 – 5:00
This course is offered for those who have previously completed Propane Piping System Requirements (PPSR). Propane fueled appliances require an adequate volume of propane gas at the proper pressure. This can only be accomplished if the piping system has been properly sized and the correct regulators have been properly installed and adjusted.
Course Content: Individuals attending this session will be expected to utilize current applicable codes to:
- Layout diagrams of propane piping systems, including regulator location.
- Properly size the propane piping systems utilizing various two-stage & elevated pressure systems.
- Install, test, and adjust propane pressure regulators in piping systems, and
- Requirements for proper testing of new piping prior to acceptance and initial operation.
- Documentation of all work performed.
*A NFPA Pamphlet 58 & NFPA Pamphlet 54 is required for class, order if needed.
*Prior to any test, the instructor must see photo identification. Social security number & PMSB license number (if applicable) must be provided.
*Fees are non-refundable without prior cancellation notice.
Chapter 226 requires training relative to the applicable code, completion of a knowledge assessment (WQA – Written Qualification Assessment), and completion of a skills assessment every three (3) years. These classes meet these requirements. Upon training session completion a WQA (closed book test) will be administered to all participants. The WQA will be retained by the Iowa Propane Gas Association, for evaluation and record keeping. Results will be sent to the participants after completion of the WQA , and completion of the Skills Assessment will be requested. Upon successful completion of both the written and skills assessment, a certification of completion will be provided.
When: 7 ½ day sessions throughout the state have been scheduled. Morning classes run from 8:00 a.m. to noon and afternoon classes will be from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration check-in begins ½ hour before each class.
Class space is limited. All classes will have a maximum number of attendees. For this reason, we encourage you to complete the registration ASAP. Completed registrations and those including full payment, will be given priority over incomplete registrations.
